Protection from Punishment Essay -- Government, Separation of Powers,
During the early stages of the creation of a government, it is common to witness a heavy debate over ways to both restrict the power of the government from becoming a tyranny and protect the rights of individual citizens. Founders often realize that individual citizens, if not protected somehow, would be powerless to prevent against such a government if it became corrupt. Therefore, in the creation of the American and British governments, those worried about these possibilities suggested separations of power and individual rights to be included in the documents that form the government. This debate was extremely controversial in the formation of the American government, and created a rift that, if not resolved, could have torn apart the country. Understanding this possibility, the Federalists of America agreed to hear out the proposals of the Anti-Federalists during the ratification debates of 1789 through 1791. This Bill of Rights emphasized individual rights that would protect powe rless citizens from possible tyranny of the federal government, both physical and abstract. One of the amendments proposed by James Madison, and subsequently ratified, was that ââ¬Å"Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.â⬠This amendment was eventually grouped into the ten amendments of the Bill of Rights, and is now known simply as the Eighth Amendment. Though this seems to be a rather straightforward law, below the surface one can see the history of struggle it was derived from, the fight that ensued over its incorporation, and how even the terms it uses have greatly affected its interpretation since December 15, 1791. As America was created almost as a child of the British Empire,... ...â⬠(Levy 238). This is very symbolic of the American nature of law in general, as the American ideal is to create a country of responsible citizens, not just to lock them away. The Eighth Amendmentââ¬â¢s history, through the tortures of scores of people to the debates over its inception, is filled with examples that define the history of American government. Though not the most discussed amendment during the revolutionary stage, the Eighth Amendment is quite possibly the most controversial article of the Bill of Rights in todayââ¬â¢s society, as the question of punishment, specifically the death penalty, is constantly under debate. It is fascinating to study how, even at a time of such confusion and chaos, founders such as Madison and Henry were able to create an amendment that would retain the rights of citizens in a constantly progressing society for centuries to come.

Example of Interpersonal Communication
Concept Application Paper Aside from food, water, oxygen and other practical needs, communication with the people around us has proven to be essential for our own well-being. The different types and styles of communication allow ourselves the opportunity to create and build relationships with the people around us. It is also the basis on how we define ourselves through self-image and self-esteem. Through social, inflated, and deflated comparison we shape ourselves into the image in which we feel would satisfy the people around us; how we think others want to see us.In more cases it is a negative thing as the true soul inside a person is usually too ashamed or scared to reveal themselves to the public. We then force ourselves to shape into an image we feel will please the people around us. Evolved from our life experiences, we set an imaginary guideline in our mind for people to be considered ââ¬Ënormalââ¬â¢ based on our perception of how society should behave. We automatically isolate anyone who deviates from these ââ¬Å"guidelinesâ⬠; they might include a person from a different culture or someone who simply wants to express themself. It was our responsibility to investigate how society reacts to an adjustment in the social norm. In this experiment I wore a tank top, board-shorts, and flip-flops in which I enacted in unordinary verbal and non-verbal communication with the people around me. As a male in the American culture, I dress myself according to what I suppose is ââ¬Ëtrendyââ¬â¢ in my sub-culture. By observing a personââ¬â¢s patterns in the way they dress and how they act, it is possible to discover a personââ¬â¢s personality. An identity is created through our manners, appearance, and the environment we associate ourselves around. We pick and choose how we want others to see us in different situations, so of course no one would ever think of dressing out of their usual pattern for no apparent reason. However, the purpose of the expe riment is not to continue to carry on with daily procedures, but to deviate and record reactions and changes in behavior of bystanders. I devised a theory that I would be able to observe two sets of reactions, one from the people whom I share relationships with and random students whom I have never met before.People who have knowledge about my existence would be able to detect a change in behavior while a stranger would just consider their encounter simply as something out of the ordinary. I chose to wear clothing not typically suited for the weather; Corvallis was reaching mid 40os and I had decided to be dressed in clothes one would wear to the beach. I felt this was an appropriate change in behavior because it would not be following the usual guidelines of the social norm. Everyone had one or two jackets and long pants, setting the basic social code to follow. However, since I was not abiding to this ââ¬Ësystemââ¬â¢, I was considered an outcast or placed in an out-group of t he current social culture. Even if I were not doing an experiment and intentionally dressing this specific way, I would be relaying non-verbal codes to whoever saw me which in their opinion would be interpreted much different than what I may have meant them to be. It would all be a matter of opinion or relational communication between me and the people in the environment. The channels of communication would be through non-verbal/ non-vocal communication.Other channels would be invalid because I would not be communicating through other means including spoken or written words. However, fewer available channels did not result in any less interaction. In the experiment, it was interesting as the deviation from the social norm sparked two reactions in people whom either allowed this contact to prohibit them from verbally communicating with me or on the contrary, the change actually was a catalyst and started verbal communication as the main topic of discussion. This occurred in both group s of people whom I was acquaintances with and people I did not know. A friend who had happened to see me first as I left my room was slightly shocked and warned me about the weather. Although their tone wasnââ¬â¢t hostile, more trying to help, the message that I interpreted was ââ¬Å"If youââ¬â¢re not going to change clothes youââ¬â¢re going to look really weird wearing that type of clothing and secondly, youââ¬â¢ll be cold for the rest of the time until you decide to change your mind. My reaction to this conversation was close to emotionless because I would have reacted the same and produced similar responses because we interpret any change in behavior as ââ¬Ënot normalââ¬â¢. Walking to a dining hall outside in public, my first observation was receiving numerous stares from the people passing me. Through my analysis this was a form of intrapersonal communication because I decoded their body language with a certain meaning and message.By simple gestures of staring and changes in body language, it encoded a message of ââ¬Ëout castingââ¬â¢ to the receiver solely based on the type of clothing I wore. I am thankful that I was not dramatically influenced by any of the responses and reactions I observed between my friends and the public. My analysis is these responses were forms of communication which easily could have been affected by culture and perception. Peopleââ¬â¢s different interpretations would eventually lead to the shaping and defining of oneââ¬â¢s identity through their behavior and appearance based on how they want others to see themselves.Although it apparent that media has a large influence on choosing how we present our public self, it may seem that the people around us also have a large influence as well. They might include significant others or just ordinary people whom we compare ourselves to in social comparison. This experiment was a great understanding of how some people automatically separate someone just by expr essing themselves. Society defines certain things such as fashion or behavior attached with the message, ââ¬Å"follow the same guidelines or beware of being put in an out-group. Majority of people will be high-self monitors and follow the norm. Personally, I feel I am this way because of the need to feel belonging to a particular group or something. I learned that it is much harder to express one-self based on our own intuition of being ââ¬Ëjudgedââ¬â¢ for what we do. By investigating how society reacted to an adjustment in the social norm, it was evident when I wore different clothing; the results when engaged were rather un-warming incidents of unordinary verbal and non-verbal communication.

Harry Potter and the Sorcererââ¬â¢s Stone: From Book to Film Essay
Harry Potter and the Sorcererââ¬â¢s Stone was the first of seven book series by J. K. Rowling first published on July 1997. It is about the adventure of an eleven-year-old boy who grew up with his aunt and uncle and later discovers that he comes from a family of witches and wizards. The film adaptation of the book was released in 2001 by Warner Bros. , and, like any film adaptation, has had its share of praises and criticisms. Some held that the film had been ââ¬Å"faithfulâ⬠to the book, but of course, just like in any other film adaptation, there will always be some alterations from the book from which film adaptations were based. Some of the criticisms of the film adaptation of the first Harry Potter series include the director, Chris Columbus, being ââ¬Å"too slavish a devotion to the book and too little of his own creative inputâ⬠(Silvain). Corliss criticized that ââ¬Å"Columbus is content to make a studentââ¬â¢s copy of the original master portrait. â⬠He held that ââ¬Å"the Harry Potter film has loads of technical expertise but lacks the enthralling life of Rowlingââ¬â¢s original. â⬠Indeed, the film adaptation had barely altered the story from the book. Nevertheless, there were alterations and the film still falls short from the magical experience enjoyed by the readers. There are some minor differences in the filmââ¬â¢s depiction of characters. As an example, Hagrid, who was described in the book as being ââ¬Å"almost twice as tall as a normal man and at least five times as wideâ⬠(Rowling, 14), although depicted in the film as much taller to be ââ¬Å"almost twice as tallâ⬠than any man, was not ââ¬Å"five times as wide. â⬠These differences, however, are almost negligible because of the other characters brilliant depiction in the film. Read more:à Number of words in the harry potter series. The depictions of Hogwarts professors were perfect: Dumbledoreââ¬â¢s long silvery hair and beard marked him unmistakably the wisest, if not the strongest, wizard in the story; Professor McGonnagalââ¬â¢s commanding presence and Professor Snapeââ¬â¢s intimidating presence were brilliantly played by the actors. The other charactersââ¬â¢ depictions were superb, most especially the Dursleys, the Weasleys, Hermione and Malfoy. Harryââ¬â¢s Scotch-tape bound eyeglasses could also not be missed out. When it comes to the storyline, the film has altered a lot from the book without losing the overall content. For starters, the film did not begin with the Dursleys, not with their indifference to witches and wizards, and most especially not with Uncle Vernonââ¬â¢s experiences, unwittingly of magic, on his way to office and back home, as was first presented in the book. Hagrid did not mention in the film that he borrowed the motorcycle from Sirius Black, who Rowling foreshadowed in the book as we learn from a later series that Sirius is Harryââ¬â¢s godfather. Also in the book, when Dumbledore left baby Potter in the Dursleyââ¬â¢s doorstep, he left the letter with Harry clutching it, not beside Harry as presented in the film. As Harry is growing up, the film lacks presentation on how the Dursleys, most especially Dudley, mistreat Harry. There was no mention of Mrs. Figgs; neither Piers nor Stonewall high from where Harry would be studying if he had not received the letter from Hogwarts was mentioned in the film. In the film, when Harry received his first letter from Hogwarts, it was Dudley who snatched it away from him, while in the book it was Uncle Vernon, and while the film showed that succeeding letters from Hogwarts to Harry was being burned or shredded into pieces, there was no presentation of Harry moving from under the stairs to a room next to Dudleyââ¬â¢s. When Hagrid finally brought Harry the Hogwarts letter in the little shack atop a rock in the middle of the sea on Harrryââ¬â¢s birthday, the confrontation between Hagrid and Uncle Vernon lacked the intensity that was presented in the book. Explanations of Hagrid to Harry about Hogwarts and his parents is also lacking in details in the film. Moreover, Hagrid and Harry did not left in the middle of the night during a storm in the bookââ¬â¢s version of the story. Events in Diagon Alley presented in the film also lack faithfulness from the book. The twisting trail to the vaults in Gringotts was omitted as well as Hagridââ¬â¢s reaction to this. The scene in Madam Malkinââ¬â¢s shop where Harry met a boy, who we later learn to be Draco Malfoy, for the first time was also omitted. This is also where Harry was supposed to hear about Quidditch based on the book, as well as the different Hogwart houses and differences of witch and wizard lineages, which Hagrid later on explained to Harry. Hagrid did not leave Harry alone when he purchased his first wand; it was in Madam Malkinââ¬â¢s shop that Hagrid had left Harry to recompose himself from their trip through the Gringotts vaults. At Ollivanderââ¬â¢s, Harry tried many wands, more than three unlike what was depicted in the film, before the man attending him had finally found the right wand for Harry. Furthermore, Harry did not make the least indication of a spell in trying the wands prior to finding the right one as the man attending him had stopped Harry before he can wave the wands. The film also did not include Uncle Vernon being asked by Harry and actually dropping Harry off to the train station. It was in Hogwarts express that Harry and Malfoy had their first confrontation; where Malfoy advised Harry not ââ¬Å"to go making friends with the wrong sortâ⬠and Harry replying that he ââ¬Å"can tell who the wrong sort areâ⬠by himself, in contrast with the film where this scene was presented after the first years entered Hogwarts through an underground passage by the lake. There was no song from the sorting hat, nor were there any Hogwarts song in the film. The events following Holloween night was presented in the film not exactly as it was described in the book. Norbert, the Norwegian Ridgeback baby dragon that Hagrid raised, was not sent to Romania by the Ministry of Magic, but was sent there through Charlieââ¬â¢s friends. Harry and Hermioneââ¬â¢s adventure of smuggling Norbert out of Hogwarts was never mentioned in the film. Harry, Hermione, Malfoy, and Nevilleââ¬â¢s detention in the forbidden forest also differed from how it was described in the book. The film skipped Harry being grouped with Hagrid and Hermione first before Hagrid decided that he should come with Malfoy and Fang as Harry is much braver than Neville and could stand up to Malfoyââ¬â¢s bullying. Harry has also met three centaurs, even riding on the back of one. Perhaps the most noticeable difference between the filmââ¬â¢s presentation and the bookââ¬â¢s story could be found during Harry, Ron and Hermioneââ¬â¢s adventure going after the sorcererââ¬â¢s stone. In chapter 16 of the book, Harry played the flute given to him by Hagrid as a Christmas present to make Fluffy fall asleep and had no trouble getting past him. After going through the trapdoor, both Harry and Ron were having trouble with the Devilââ¬â¢s Snare and Hermione had to use the spell she had with Snape on Harryââ¬â¢s first Quidditch match to free them. Then, all three went to catch the right key, each taking a broomstick, at the end of the passageway. The flying keys did not attack but were moving so fast that it was difficult to catch them. On the giant chess board, Harry, Ron and Hermione had to replace chess pieces to play the game, not Ron riding the knightââ¬â¢s horse. Furthermore, there was no indication in the book that the giant chess pieces were smashed into destruction. There were also no sing of any troll in a chamber after getting past the giant chess game. Finally, Harry and Hermione had to solve a puzzle set up by Professor Snape as the last obstacle to enter the chamber where the Mirror of Erised had been moved to. This scene is totally missing from the film. The climax of the story, Harryââ¬â¢s confrontation with Professor Quirrel and Voldemort, had been faithful to the book, although in the book, Harry had not destroyed Professor Quirrel in the end of their confrontation. The filmââ¬â¢s depiction of Voldemortââ¬â¢s face at the back of Professor Quirrelââ¬â¢s head was also slightly differed from the bookââ¬â¢s description. The book described it as ââ¬Å"chalk white with glaring red eyes and slits for nostrils, like a snakeâ⬠(Rowling, 293). Voldemortââ¬â¢s nose as depicted in the film was not very snakelike. There are a few more difference between the film and the bookââ¬â¢s story: the film had not depicted Harry not being afraid of mentioning Voldemortââ¬â¢s name; Harry had played in two Quidditch matches in the book; Peeves antics were missing in the film; and Dumbledore did not explain Professor Snape and James Potterââ¬â¢s, Harryââ¬â¢s father, history. Simply put, the film does not have the detailed events presented in the book. It has jumbled the events as it happened in the book while still able to present roughly the same story. However, for the Harry Potter fanatic, the most frustrating difference between the film and the book was the filmââ¬â¢s lack of magical experience. For a film based on a magical fantasy book series, Harry Potter and the Sorcererââ¬â¢s Stone film, ironically, had not been magical, missing out on some important details and suspense. On the other hand, the film tried to be as faithful to Rowlingââ¬â¢s story. Even with omissions and alterations, the film basically presented the same story as Rowlingââ¬â¢s. It, however, lacked the details that Rowling had included in the book. Given the limitations of technology in computer graphics and animation, the film has brought Hogwarts to life, but could never match up to the experience that reading the book had. As a final note, while the film had a total gross of approximately $970 billion, it has surprisingly not met the expectation of fanatics and readers worldwide with its lack of magic and omissions of some scenes that were somehow important to the overall presentation of the story.

Interview with Entrepreneur Essay
1. Why did you start your own business? Curt has always had a passion for engineering. When he was younger he work as a mechanical engineer through AMP. Then changed to metal engineering but decided he was tired of working for corporate office after 7 years and pursed his hobby into a career. Curt has always enjoyed boating and good seafood. For years before his founded business, he would enjoy being on the boat and catching good seafood which is when he wanted to bring fresh seafood to central Pennsylvania. 2. Is running your own business as hard as everyone says that it is? Yes and no. Heââ¬â¢s states that there are proââ¬â¢s and conââ¬â¢s to any situation especially in the business world. He views his proââ¬â¢s would be to be able to set your own schedule and to him, he sees his ââ¬Å"workâ⬠not so much as work but something that he enjoys and looks forward to waking up every day to. Some of the conââ¬â¢s he listed were that itââ¬â¢s hard to have leave time away from his business. He solely owns 2 local businesses; one located on Eisenhower Blvd., Harrisburg and the other on the Carlisle Pike, Mechanicsburg, and an online business. The online shop (www.ilovecrabs.com) is ran out of his Carlisle pike location where fed ex comes daily to deliver next day shipment to anyone within the 50 states. His business has been very successful. 3. Do you believe the efforts and rewards for owning your own business are worth the sacrifices? Yes, Curt believes that he is very happy with the outcome of where his business is today. He says that he might change a few things looking back but nothing too serious. He says the business world is about risk and sometimes things work very well and sometimes they fail but itââ¬â¢s always good to know when to back out and when to leap towards something. 4. Did you always see yourself as an entrepreneur, or that you would in time, owning your own business? To a certain extent he has always wanted more. Between 16-17 years old, he seemed to be great at buying and selling different things. Even working as an engineer for 7 years, he would buy and sell anything really that he could make a profit on. 5. How did you finance your initial startup costs for your small business? He saved some money working but he also went to the bank forà part of it. His mother, Sharon Engle, helps with organizing his finances every Tuesday. 6. How do you market or advertise? What seems to have the most positive effect in bringing in profitable customers? Curt used to do the advertising himself but he has hired someone to do that for him to help take some load off. Most advertising is through their internet retail website (www.ilovecrabs.com), but their two local retail shops work with clipper magazine, or you could sign up with their crabsavers newsletter and save $10 off your first order and receive either text messages and or emails with coupons and special deals weekly. They used to advertise with the newspaper and yellow pages but he claims itââ¬â¢s becoming a dying trade. He uses organic advertising online with google now too. He also states the radio is a way to have local customers aware that he is bringing this fresh seafood in daily but not so much for sales and promotions, he sticks to his coupons and surplus sales.Teaming up with Obryckiââ¬â¢s from Maryland, Harbour house crabs now provides the Obryckââ¬â¢s famous seasoning along with their personal blends of seasonings. 7. Whatââ¬â¢s your greatest entrepreneurial achievement? That the business is still thriving after 15 years since being founded. His first retail shop boomed to the online business after about his first 2-3 years of opening. It became such a hit that in 2009 he opened his second retail shop and moved his online shop to process through the second shop due to size and area. 8. How do you identify business opportunities and what measures do you take to decide whether to invest into this opportunity? He says usually he will stick with his gut feeling but sometimes itââ¬â¢s a little more in depth then that he explains. After successfully launching his second store for 1 à ½ years, he decided to partner up with Captain Bobââ¬â¢s restaurant. Unfortunately, it became a little too much to handle with the ordering of their products vs. what his small retail shop has to offer. So after 1 year, he gave back his part of the company to the owner of Captain Bobââ¬â¢s and still sells fresh crabs to the restaurant as they have always done before. 9. Whatââ¬â¢s the toughest feedback youââ¬â¢ve ever received and how did you learn or improve from it? ââ¬Å"There will always be customers that you wonââ¬â¢t be able to satisfy no matter how much you try to do for them in fixing the situation.â⬠He said the first few negative comments he received was through his onlineà website and was taken personally. Curt had taken this hard because he wasnââ¬â¢t able to satisfy the customers, which is his companyââ¬â¢s main goal when providing this fresh food. 10. What makes your business stand out from your competitors? ââ¬Å"We stand out in quality and customer service.â⬠He says, ââ¬Å"We canââ¬â¢t control mother nature and there are certain variables that cause things to be difficult at times but when something happens, our team is encouraged to kill the customer with kindness but also with that have a strong backbone for the company, donââ¬â¢t let someone step all over you but be kind.â⬠11. How many hours do you work daily? How has this effected your personal or family life? Do you take time out to have fun? Well because Curt doesnââ¬â¢t have a partner, his phone is on him 24/7 and will answer from the time he wakes up until 10pm. He does have a home office and bases all his finances, strategies, and more at his home so itââ¬â¢s difficult sometimes to have to separate the two. He enjoys it to be near his family more but then again he walks away from a lot to take a business call. 12. What kind of culture exists in your organization? The culture that goes with my products are anyone who enjoys fresh seafood, someone or even a group wanting to get together to crack open some crabs and enjoy quality food with quality time given. Bringing friends and families together. 13. In one word, characterize your life as an entrepreneur. Challenging. 14. Who has been your greatest inspiration and why? His grandfather because in 1934 during the great depression era, his grandfather opened up a small business selling Engle equipment, originally type-writers. The business took off so well that Curtââ¬â¢s father and uncle took it over when his grandfather passed. Eventually Toshiba bought the company out and still sells equipment today! 15. Describe how you built a successful profitable customer base? Curt believes finding a service or product that the customers want or demand is the first step he took, then backing that up with customer service has what made this so successful. 16. Whatââ¬â¢s the best advice youââ¬â¢ve been given? ââ¬Å"Never give up?â⬠Curt explains to me that he tells his kids for example thatà when they say something like ââ¬Å"I canââ¬â¢tâ⬠, he will in return respond ââ¬Å"Never say I canââ¬â¢t, thatââ¬â¢s giving up before even trying, and you should at least always try whether you win or lose.â⬠17. Excluding yours, what company or business do you admire most and why? Is it a product or service that draws you in? Amazon. He loves not only the products that are so easily obtained but he loves their fast and reliable service provided. 18. Knowing what you know now, is there anything that you would do differently? ââ¬Å"I wouldâ⬠. There were a few investments Curt had but they werenââ¬â¢t worth the trouble. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s still an experienceâ⬠, he says but itââ¬â¢s good to know when to leave. 19. If I were to want to open up a small business tomorrow, what would be the top priority on my to-do list? He suggests to write a business plan and take it to the business administration building so they can review it and approve your idea. It takes a lot of research to find all that you need but itââ¬â¢s the foundation of the whole project. He also says that looking back at his first business plan, itââ¬â¢s accurate but at the same time off from what it really was from his planning. 20. Do you have an exit strategy? Currently Mr. Engle is looking for an exit strategy because he didnââ¬â¢t really have one at the time of presenting his plan. He did but not what he is really planning now. Ironically as I asked Curt this question, he asked me about taking over the business but I also did work for him from 2005-2013 so I do know a lot about running the stores. I denied though because I have other plans.

Critique and Analysis Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Critique and Analysis - Coursework Example Dancing in public is a challenge to many students. The teacher assures the student that by listening and following the lesson they will not have to worry about dancing in public. They get the assurance that if they listen they will be able to impress their fellow student and dates. How to act in public so as to impress others and to avoid embarrassing oneself are is a key challenge to while learning how to behave in social spheres. Therefore, the teacherââ¬â¢s choice to use these factors to motivate the students to listen was an effective teaching skill. It was an effective choice because it addressed an issue the students faced. I would suggest a situational example to emphasize further the importance of the lesson. The lesson was well organized. The introduction shows the intended plan to achieve the goal of the lesson. The body is well organized and systematic. The students start by learning what rhythm is and how to recognize it in music. They then learn about movement and eventually how to incorporate rhythm and movement to make a dance. The conclusion restates the purpose of the lesson and relates it to an actual event in the lives of the students. The systematic organization was effective. The teacher involves the student actively from the introduction of the lesson by asking the students questions. The teacher keeps asking questions through the lesson to determine if the students understand the topic. To ensure participation, the teacher applies a random sampling technique. The lesson also involves a class dance routine involving all the students. The teacherââ¬â¢s techniques were effective in involving the students in the lesson. Particularly the dance routine that the students had to learn. The random sampling technique used to ensure participation was effective since it keeps the students alert and aware that they all had to participate. The teacher chooses to

Oil and Energy Industry in UAE Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Oil and Energy Industry in UAE - Essay Example m.) respectively and hence world's fifth and fourth largest respectively (Khalil 2009). UAE is OPEC's third largest oil producer and currently pumps 2.4 million b/d (Khalil). UAE projects to enhance upstream as well as downstream production capacities (Energy Information Administration 2007). Historically, oil, and recently natural gas, has contributed vitally to UAE's overall economic development and growth (UAE Federal e-Government Portal 2006). Currently, energy sector, especially oil and gas, contributes as much as 62% to UAE's overall economy (UAE Federal e-Government Portal). Essentially, Abu Dhabi holds sway over UAE's oil capacity both in overall production capabilities and proven reserves (9.2 billion barrels) (EIA). Moreover, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), UAE's largest state-owned company, dominates production (EIA) and controls UAE's quota prescribed by OPEC (EIA). Notwithstanding plans to diversify economy (Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030 n.d.), UAE continues to rely on oil and gas as major sources for state revenues ("Non-Oil Sectors Ac... This, in fact, poses serious challenges for an economy whose performance has depended largely on international oil markets (Husain, Tazhibayeva, and Ter-Martirosyan 2008). Moreover, not only has economic performance in an oil-rich country such as UAE depended on energy sector's positive or negative shocks but fiscal policies seem to strongly correlate with oil prices as well and hence impact positively or negatively, depending on fluctuations in oil prices, non-oil production sectors (see fig. 1). [Insert Your Last Name] 3 Fig. 1. Husain, Tazhibayeva, and Ter-Martirosyan Indeed, a growing body of analyses and government reports (Boer & Turner; Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030 ) have repeatedly stressed significance of and implications for economic diversification in Gulf Council Countries (GCC), of which UAE is a member. The case for diversification in UAE is even more pressing given UAE's reliance on Abu Dhabi and Dubai as leading engines for country's economic growth (O'Sullivan 2007). Further, given each emirate's autonomous status according to constitution (O'Sullivan), UAE cannot enact a universal and binding economic policy unless political authority steps in. This is, again, particularly true given Abu Dhabi's and Dubai's attraction force as opposed to remaining emirates' fading allure, especially to youth. So far, Abu Dhabi and Dubai, UAE's leading economies, both have managed to maintain healthy economic growth rates according to each emirate's strategic vision.
